[1] What is WinBoard?

WinBoard is a graphical chessboard that can serve as a user interface for
GNU Chess, for the Internet Chess Servers, or for email correspondence
chess, or can be used by itself. WinBoard is free software.

WinBoard runs only under true Microsoft Win32 systems, such as
Windows NT and Windows 95.

[2] Giveaway Wizard & WinBoard

I have made the Giveaway Wizard almost fully WinBoard-compatible.
That means you can play your Giveaway games with a graphical
chessboard, choose commands from menu - all things you would
normally do with a chess program. However, it does *NOT* run
smoothly yet, there are several incompatibilities. Your system
might even get unstable sometimes. Here are two things which
you should *NEVER* do (or the system may become unstable):

  1. Never "close" WinBoard, but use (menu) File - Exit!
  2. Never exit WinBoard while the program is thinking!

Please don't expect too much from this hybrid of chess interface
and Giveaway chess engine! If you have too many problems
I'd recommend you playing with the text interface.

[3] Getting WinBoard

You can download WinBoard from many Internet sites, for example
from WinBoard's author Chess Web site:

 http://www.research.digital.com/SRC/personal/Tim_Mann/chess.html.

The latest version I know of is "3.4, pathchlevel 1". I don't
recommend using older versions.

[4] Setting up WinBoard to work with Giveaway Wizard

1. UNZIP winboard.zip to a temporary directory.

2. CREATE a new directory (e.g. "c:\games\giveaway") and
COPY the following files (from the temporary directory) into it:

	WinBoard.exe
	WinBoard.hlp

   Then COPY the files:

	giveaway.exe
	move.txt
	winboard.ini

(from "giveaway.zip") into the above mentioned directory.

3. Use the Program Manager or the Explorer to create a new FOLDER (for
example, "Giveaway Chess") and an icon (SHORTCUT) to WinBoard.exe.
At the Shortcut name prompt, you may want to change it from "WinBoard"
to smth. like "Giveaway Wizard 2.0".

4. Now, (very important)

Using the Program Manager or the Explorer, add to that folder
a SHORTCUT to "Notepad.exe" (it is in your WINDOWS directory).
At the command line prompt add the path to the file "move.txt",
so that the command line would contain smth. like:

	c:\windows\notepad.exe c:\games\giveaway\move.txt

Change properties of this shortcut so, that you could run it
by pressing just three buttons, (i.e. change the SHORTCUT KEY from
   "None" to e.g. "CTRL-SHIFT-M").

The installation is now complete!

[5] Playing with Giveaway Wizard using WinBoard.

Well, it is just like playing chess, except for the situations
mentioned in [6]. Giveaway Wizard supports all menu commands
except "Move now". Loading/editing positions is available only in
the registered version. Note that even "Show thinking" and "Hint"
are supported! At the start, Giveaway Wizard also produces
the file "a_random.fen" with a random opening setup - you
can load this position and play from it instead of standard setup.
(This is sometimes referred to as "Fisher Random Setup")

[6] Treating special ("Giveaway") cases.

Normally, WinBoard will reject the moves illegal in classical chess
sense. This includes putting/leaving your king in check and promoting
your pawn to king. Here is a trick, which resolves this problem:

Although WinBoard does not allow you to put(leave) the king in check
it does allow the program to make such moves. So all you need to do
is let the program make the move for you (choose "Mode", "Machine White"
or "Machine Black", which color you play). But - if there is more than
one possible move, you cannot be sure that Giveaway Wizard will choose
the one you want to play. So before you let it play, press "CTRL-SHIFT-M"
(or whatever shortcut you installed to the file "move.txt") and type
your move like e.g. e1f2. Save the changes, and let Giveaway Wizard
play - it will immediately make the move you typed. To continue playing
you should change the colors back, of course.

  Example: (you are playing black)

  1. e3 b5
  2. Bxb5 d5 (WinBoard rejects the move)

  Do the following:

  press CTRL-SHIFT-M, type d7d5, ALT-F4, Enter;
Choose "Mode", "Machine Black". The move d5 is immediately made.
Choose "Mode", "Machine White" to resume playing black.

Same as above, to promote a pawn to king, enter moves like e.g.
d7d8K in "move.txt". Giveaway Wizard will show the move as promotion
to Queen, but with a warning "I promoted to *KING* !", and move the
Queen as if it were King on the board.
